A Parya Movie Night with Babak Payami
“Frame of Mind” is a special weekly movie presentation hosted by the Parya Trillium Foundation and presented by filmmaker Babak Payami. A film will be featured every Thursday night with an introduction followed by an open discussion about the film.
Babak Payami’s introduction to the weakly film will include historic context, commentary on the importance of the featured film as well as topical discussions on story, themes and cinematic elements.
The films presented will highlight international cinema including works from Iran and will be conducted in English or Farsi depending on the topic and audience. Films will be announced at the end of each Thursday screening for the next week.
These entertaining and informative presentations are intended to celebrate Cinema as a modern art form and engage audiences with filmmakers and their work. Presentations will range from anecdotes, behind the scenes stories to personal reflections and insights from a filmmaker’s perspective. Each film will be followed by a lively discussion with the audience that will continue on dedicated social media channels.

BABAK PAYAMI Bio
Internationally acclaimed Iranian-Canadian filmmaker Babak Payami was born in Iran, grew up in Afghanistan during his early childhood and later moved to Canada where he became a citizen and studied at the University of Toronto. He made his debut feature film One More Day in Iran which premiered at the Berlin Panorama Special Program (2000) and won the Best Artistic Contribution award at the Tokyo International Film festival that same year. His second feature film Secret Ballot was shot in Iran and premiered in Competition at the Venice International film festival and won numerous awards including the Silver Lion for Best Director in 2001 with its North American Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. In 2003, he released his third Iranian feature Silence Between Two Thoughts which was confiscated by the Iranian authorities. A restored version of Silence Between Two Thoughts premiered at the Venice International film festival Horizons Competition and Toronto International Film Festival and won several awards including the Best feature film award from the Newport International Film festival.
In 2009 Payami directed a music video with Patti Smith and Youssou N’dour in support of a Benetton sponsored microcredit charity organization in Senegal. Later that year he directed a music video for Canadian rock band Blurred Vision in support of the Iranian democratic movement which went on to be acclaimed among the top 100 most influential music videos of all time by the Televisor Music Video Exhibit in Germany.
Babak Payami has served on numerous international film festival juries including Moscow, Berlin, Warsaw, Hong Kong, Sofia, Beirut and Cairo. He has taught film directing at the Ludwigsburg Film Academy of Stuttgart Germany, was the creative Director of the Media Studio of Fabrica, a United Colours Of Benetton communication arts research centre in Venice, and conducted numerous filmmaking workshops. In 2013, he was the Artistic Director of the Tirgan Cultural biennial at the Toronto Harbourfront Centre which hosted over 130,000 visitors over four days with 92 artistic programs.
Payami recently released his Canadian feature drama Manhattan Undying (2016) released by Paramount Pictures. He co-wrote the screenplay and co-directed with Michel Fuzellier, the animated feature Iqbal, the Story of a Fearless Child (2015). His Toronto-based Payam Films and Imagisti Studios are dedicated to film education, music and film production.
Babak Payami is currently preparing for his next Canadian feature film scheduled for production in 2017.
